From December 10 to 12, 2024, the beautiful city of Lecce hosted an international event at the Mediterranean Center for Climate Change (CMCC). As part of the Green Heritage project, the workshop focused on a critical topic of our time: the impact of climate change on intangible cultural heritage.
The initiative provided a unique opportunity for university professors, researchers, sector experts, and professionals from diverse fields—such as climatology, anthropology, cultural heritage conservation, and environmental policy—to gather and exchange ideas. Over the course of three days, participants delved into the complex interplay between climate change and the traditions, practices, and cultural expressions that form the intangible wealth of our societies.
Through interactive sessions, roundtables, and case study presentations, innovative research and practical strategies were shared to address the challenges posed by climate change. Particular focus was given to topics such as safeguarding traditional crafts, preserving local knowledge connected to nature, and promoting sustainable policies to protect cultural heritage for future generations.
A standout feature of the workshop was the active engagement of participants, who contributed ideas, proposals, and diverse perspectives, fostering a climate of constructive and stimulating exchange. This collaborative atmosphere enabled the development of innovative solutions and concrete action plans that will play a key role in the continuation of the Green Heritage project.
At the conclusion of the event, a shared awareness emerged: only through international cooperation, interdisciplinary research, and continuous dialogue between science and culture can we effectively respond to the challenges that climate change poses to our intangible heritage.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who participated and made this initiative a success. We invite you to stay updated on the next steps of the Green Heritage project and join us in our commitment to preserving the unbreakable bond between culture and the environment.
Together, we can make a difference for a sustainable and culturally rich future!
